4. Drain the old radiator

Once finished close the bleed valve. Lift the radiator up from the bracket and tip the remaining water into the bucket before lifting it off. Once the majority of the water is out put some tissue in both ends to stop it leaking onto the carpet. Turn the radiator upside down so that, when moving the old radiator, itís not losing water. Be careful, as radiators are heavy to lift and you may need an assistant.

5. Install your new radiator

Before fitting in a clockwise direction wrap a short piece (approx. 150mm) of PTFE waterproof tape around the thread of the new radiator, this helps to seal and keep it watertight as the fitting may be a little worn. Then lift onto the wall brackets and line up the valves on both ends so they sit on the radiator connections. You may need an assistant to help lift and hold the radiator in place. Carefully tighten the nut by hand onto each valve without cross threading them.

6. Tighten the valves

To tighten it, hold the valve assembly with a wrench so it is not able to pull off the pipe. Get another wrench to connect the nut. Note: If thereís a leak at a later date then you can tighten the nut slightly to stop it but if initially itís too tight you have to start over.

7. Open the flow valve

Once both connections are tight, itís time to open the bleed valve at the top of the radiator. The valve used to turn the radiator on and off located at the bottom is called the flow valve this needs to be opened to allow water to flow in and air to be released from the top. Itís time to close the bleed valve when water starts to leak from it; this shows the radiator is full.

8. FinallyÖopen the return valve

The return valve at the bottom of the radiator should be opened with the same amount of turns it took to close it previously. This allows water to flow through the system. Check both connections for leaks then switch your heating on and double check. Well done, youíve just replaced your first radiator. Enjoy the heat!
